Keep your child’s future in your hands.

Having a will or naming godparents is simply not enough to keep the court system from making decisions about your children’s care in the event of your incapacity or death. (Surprising, we know.)

Don’t let a judge, who doesn’t know you or what matters to you, decide who raises your children or handles the money you’ll leave behind.

Legally naming guardians is the first step to keep your family out of expensive and unnecessary conflict.

It only takes minutes, and it’s absolutely free.

Why Do I Need to Name Guardians Legally (and not just in my Will)?

Having a will alone simply does not ensure the care of your kids if the unthinkable happens to you!

Legally naming guardians keeps your family out of expensive and unnecessary conflict.

Naming godparents doesn’t ensure your children are raised by the people you want.

Don’t let a Judge, who doesn’t know you or what matters to you, decide who raises your kids.

Take matters into your own hands, in just ten minutes. And, absolutely free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the details about our legal forms and some frequently asked questions

What is a Kids Protection Plan®?
This website allows you to create the foundational legal document that every parent must have in place to ensure your kids will be raised by people you choose, whether you become incapacitated or die suddenly.

After completing your legal guardian nomination, you will have the option to create a comprehensive Kids Protection Plan®, which is the full plan you’ll want to have in place to keep your kids out of the care of strangers or anyone you wouldn’t want raising them, no matter what.

A full Kids Protection Plan® includes naming guardians for the short-term, giving instructions to your legally named long-term and short-term guardians, giving instructions to your caregiver, and documenting exactly how you would want your children raised if anything happens to you.

Plus, we include a custom ID card for you to carry in your wallet and medical powers of attorney to give to your friends and family who may stay with your children when you go out of town (or if your children go out of town with them). Your Kids Protection Plan® may also include a confidential exclusion of guardianship, ruling out anyone you know you would never want to have care or custody of your children.

Included with your free legal guardian nomination document is a review by a Personal Family Lawyer®.

I have a Will that names guardians for my kids. Isn’t that enough?
In many cases, if you have minor children at home, a will alone will not be enough. In most cases, an estate plan that names guardians only in a will has 6 common mistakes that leave children at risk of being taken into the care of strangers, or someone you would not want raising your kids.

Read our report on the 6 common mistakes parents make when naming guardians (even when working with a lawyer), here.

Do I receive a full Kids Protection Plan® with this process?
By creating a legal document for the long-term care of your children here, you are taking care of one part of the process of legally protecting your children in case you are an accident. We are offering this part for free because every single parent needs to do it, no matter what.

The full Kids Protection Plan® is for those parents who also want to ensure their children would never be taken into the care of strangers or anyone else they would not want in the immediate term after something happens, while the long-term guardians are going through the process of being located and appointed. In addition, the Kids Protection Plan® allows you to exclude anyone you know you would never want to care for your children, no matter what. And it keeps your family values and wishes in place with your instructions on how you want your kids raised. To create a full Kids Protection Plan® for your kids, you can either do it yourself using our kit (which you will be offered after completing this first guardian naming process) OR work with one of our lawyers who are trained specifically on planning for busy families like yours. When you name legal guardians here for free, we’ll connect you with a Personal Family Lawyer® for a free review of your document and discussion of your family’s larger planning needs and desires.

Does this plan work in any state?
We highly recommend that you have this document reviewed by a lawyer licensed to practice law in your state of residence. While this document makes your wishes known about the care of your kids, your state may have other specific requirements necessary to finalize everything. And this document does not cover the financial aspects of care for your kids, which must be done with a lawyer.

If you already have your own personal lawyer, take this document to him or her for review. If you don’t, we have arranged for a free review by a Personal Family Lawyer® who is specially trained to plan for the needs of parents like you. In your email, you will find instructions about how to take us up on this offer.

What is a guardian nomination form, and what does it protect?
A guardian nomination form is the legal document that names a permanent guardian of your children should the need arise. This is the person or people who would be responsible for your kids’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. You can (and should) name someone to take care of financial matters through a Will or a Trust.
What is the difference between a guardian nomination form and a temporary guardian nomination form?
A guardian nomination form is the legal document that names a permanent guardian of your children should the need arise. A temporary guardian is someone who should be in place to care for your children until the permanent guardian is available to act. For example, if you and your spouse are in a car accident, the temporary guardian would immediately be called to go to your home and be with your children until the permanent guardian, who may live out of state, can be appointed as legal guardian and be present.
Who should I name as my children’s guardians?
If you are not sure who you want to name as legal guardians for your children, our site will walk you through a foolproof process to help you choose the right guardians to raise your children if you can’t be there.
When does a guardian nomination take effect?
A guardian nomination, when legally documented, stands in the background, ready to be used if and when something happens that results in you not being available for your child. In the event of your incapacity or death, if you have a Kids Protection Plan® in place, you will have an immediate or temporary guardian named who can immediately take short-term custody or care of your children, so they are not taken into the care of strangers while the authorities identify who should be the permanent or long-term guardian for your children. Then, the person or people you named as the long-term guardian would use the legal document that you created to petition a court to appoint them as the guardians of your child. If you have not named guardians legally, either short or long-term, there could be a fight among family members for that role, which could create turmoil and significant cost (emotional and financial) for your family.
If I change my mind about who I want as guardian, can I create a new legal document?

Absolutely! In that case, just go back to leslie.KidsProtectionPlan.com and log back in to change whatever information you choose, create a new document, tear up the one you already printed out, and sign the new document. Presto, Chango, No Problemo! We do strongly recommend that you have all legal documents reviewed by a lawyer who has expertise in planning for the legal needs of children and their parents. How do I make sure specific people would never be able to take guardian of my children?

When you put in place a comprehensive Kids Protection Plan®, you will be able to confidentially exclude anyone you would not want raising your children. That way, if those people did attempt to take custody of your child(ren), your named guardians would have powerful documentation of your wishes to block any attempt for anyone you would not want to have the care of your children.

You can create the comprehensive Kids Protection Plan® yourself with our Kit or by working with a Personal Family Lawyer® in your neighborhood who has special training on how to put in place legal plans th
